Wild Horses

Logline: Residents from small towns in rural Alberta fight to protect bands of wild horses roaming the pristine foothills of the Rocky Mountains – and clash in a battle of ideals on how to save them.

UNTAMED is a gripping character-driven four-part documentary series set against the breathtaking backdrop of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, where wild horses roam free, and the rugged terrain is the battleground for a fierce ideological clash.

The stakes are high. Emotions run deep. A solution doesn’t seem to be in sight.
Wild Horses in Canada are not protected by federal law. In Alberta, the Rocky Mountain Wildies, as these horses are called, are considered feral and only have protection under the Stray Animals Act. They can’t be shot or captured in snares. However, an annual capture season can still be declared if the government deems it necessary. If that happens, wild horses in large, indiscriminate quantities would be captured and removed by any licensed horse trapper and “disposed of” as that trapper sees fit.

Under this constant threat, to sustain the wild horse population, the days of the villagers are jammed with scouting trips, footbridge repair over the creeks, and horse rescues whenever they get into trouble.
