Blackfoot Legacy

The Blackfoot were hunters, gatherers, talented horsemen and feared warriors. Despised by the whites as savages, the Canadian government pursued a policy of cultural eradication at the end of the 19th century. Their tribal territory was once almost half the size of Germany. After a controversial treaty with the whites, they only had the right to live in three small reservations. Today, the tribal groups and their culture are once again present in Alberta’s public life. Various First Nations tribes come together for their powwows. This also includes relay races with horses (Indian Relay Racing). The Blackfoot have a different, gentler approach to horses. They treat their environment with respect, especially the animals. For them, the extremely rare white bison have healing powers.
